மும்பையின் சுறுசுறுப்பான ஒரு அபார்ட்மென்ட்டில் 10 வயது அர்ஜுன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். அவனுடைய பெரிய கனவு — உலகப் புகழ் பெற்ற கால்பந்து வீரர் மெஸ்சி போல ஒரு நாள் சாச்சர் ஸ்டார் ஆக வேண்டும்!
ஆனால் பள்ளி மைதானத்தில் அவன் நிலை வேறாக இருந்தது. பயிற்சியில் பந்தை அடிக்கும்போது சில நேரம் மிக வலுவாக அடித்து வெளியே அனுப்பிவிடுவான். சில நேரம் நண்பர்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கும் பாஸ் தவறிவிடும். அடிக்கடி தவறு செய்ததால் அவன் மனம் உடைந்தது. பயிற்சியில் கவனம் செலுத்தாமல் நண்பர்களுடன் சிரித்து விளையாடத் தொடங்கினான். எல்லாம் தெரியும் என்ற மாதிரி நடந்து கொண்டான்.
அர்ஜுனின் அப்பா ஒரு பிஸியான மருத்துவர். கடைசி போட்டியில் மகன் குறைவான மதிப்பெண் எடுத்ததை அவர் கவனித்தார்.
“மகனே, உண்மையான திறமை என்பது முதலில் சரியாகக் கற்றுக்கொள்வதில்தான் இருக்கிறது,” என்று சொல்லி, வீட்டில் தலைமுறையாக பாதுகாத்து வைத்திருந்த ஒரு சிறிய தமிழ் குறள் புத்தகத்தை அவனிடம் கொடுத்தார்.
அடுத்த வார இறுதியில் பள்ளியில் நகரம் முழுவதும் மாணவர்கள் கலந்து கொள்ளும் ஒரு சாகச கால்பந்து போட்டி நடந்தது. பெரிய பூங்காவில் கோன்களைச் சுற்றி டிரிபிளிங், பெனால்டி ஷூட், அணிப் போட்டிகள்—எல்லாம் இருந்தது.
முதல் சுற்றிலேயே அர்ஜுனின் அணி மோசமாக விளையாடியது. அவன் அடித்த பந்து மரங்களைத் தாக்கியது. கொடுத்த பாஸ்கள் நண்பர்களிடம் சேரவில்லை. அணியினர் எல்லாம் சலித்துப் போனார்கள்.
அப்போது அர்ஜுனுக்கு அப்பாவின் வார்த்தைகள் நினைவுக்கு வந்தது.
இடைவேளையில் அவன் நண்பர்களை அழைத்தான்.
“நண்பர்களே, குறுக்கு வழி வேண்டாம். சரியான முறையில் பயிற்சி செய்வோம்!” என்றான்.
அவர்கள் மைதானத்தின் ஓரத்தில் நின்று அடிப்படைகளை மீண்டும் பயிற்சி செய்தனர்.

இரண்டாம் பாதி தொடங்கியதும் அற்புதம் நடந்தது. அர்ஜுன் கோன்களை அழகாக டிரிபிளிங் செய்து கடந்து சென்றான். ஒரு சரியான பெனால்டி அடித்து கோல் அடித்தான். நண்பர்களுக்கு துல்லியமான பாஸ் கொடுத்து வெற்றிக் கோல்களையும் அமைத்தான்.
அவர்களின் அணி போட்டியை வென்று கோப்பையை எடுத்தது! மைதானம் முழுவதும் கைத்தட்டல் ஒலித்தது. பயிற்சியாளர் அர்ஜுனுக்கு “Most Improved Player” விருதையும் வழங்கினார்.
பின்னர் அப்பா அவனை அணைத்துக்கொண்டு சொன்னார்:
“பாரு மகனே… முதலில் சரியாகக் கற்று, பிறகு அதில் உறுதியாக நிற்க வேண்டும். அப்போதுதான் வெற்றி நிச்சயம்.”
