In Dubai, 14-year-old Zidan was the star player of his school basketball team. He was fast, confident, and famous for scoring difficult baskets during important matches.
After winning several games in a row, Zidan started changing.
Whenever his teammates made mistakes, he mocked them.
“If I wasn’t in this team, we would never win,” he would boast loudly.
He also became greedy for attention. During matches, instead of passing the ball, he tried scoring alone so that the crowd would cheer only for him.
At first, everyone tolerated it because he was talented. But slowly, the team spirit disappeared.
One afternoon, after losing an easy match because Zidan refused to pass the ball, their coach Mrs. Leena looked disappointed.
That evening during practice, she quietly recited a Thirukkural:
Ivaṟalum māṇpiṟanda māṉamum māṇā
uvagaiyum ētam iṟaikku.
இவறலும் மாண்பிறந்த மானமும் மாணா
உவகையும் ஏதம் இறைக்கு.
Then she explained:
“Greed, false pride, and uncontrolled excitement will destroy a leader.”
Zidan felt uncomfortable hearing those words.
That night, he replayed the match in his mind. He realized his teammates were upset not because he was talented — but because he cared only about himself.
The next day at practice, everyone expected him to behave the same way.
But Zidan surprised them.
When a younger teammate missed a shot, he encouraged him kindly. During drills, he started passing the ball more often.
Instead of celebrating alone, he cheered for everyone.
Slowly, the team became united again.
A few weeks later, the inter-school finals arrived.
The match was intense. In the final seconds, Zidan had a chance to take the winning shot. The crowd shouted his name loudly.
But he noticed his teammate Faris standing free near the basket.
Without hesitation, Zidan passed the ball.
Faris scored.
The stadium exploded with cheers.
This time, the entire team lifted the trophy together.
After the celebration, Coach Leena smiled proudly.
“A true leader is respected not for pride,” she said, “but for lifting others along with them.”
Zidan finally understood the Kural. Talent alone cannot make someone great — humility and teamwork do.

நண்பர்கள் தவறு செய்தால் உடனே கேலி செய்வான்.
“நான் இல்லாம இந்த டீம் ஜெயிக்கவே முடியாது!” என்று பெருமையாகப் பேசுவான்.
அதுமட்டுமல்லாமல், எல்லோரின் கவனமும் தன்மேல் மட்டும் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்தான்.
பந்தை மற்றவர்களிடம் கொடுக்காமல், தனியாகவே கோல் அடிக்க முயற்சித்தான்.
ஆரம்பத்தில் அவன் திறமையை நினைத்து அனைவரும் அமைதியாக இருந்தார்கள்.
ஆனால் மெதுவாக அணியின் ஒற்றுமை குறைய ஆரம்பித்தது.
ஒரு நாள் மிகவும் எளிதாக வெல்லக்கூடிய போட்டியையே அணி தோற்றது. காரணம் — ஜிதான் யாரிடமும் பந்தை பகிராமல் தனியாக விளையாடியது.
போட்டி முடிந்தபின் பயிற்சியாளர் லீனா மேடம் மிகவும் அமைதியாக ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
இவறலும் மாண்பிறந்த மானமும் மாணா
உவகையும் ஏதம் இறைக்கு.
பின்னர் அவர் விளக்கினார்:
“பேராசை, அளவுக்கு மீறிய பெருமை, கட்டுப்பாடில்லாத மகிழ்ச்சி — இவை தலைவரை வீழ்த்தும் குறைகள்.”
அந்த வார்த்தைகள் ஜிதானின் மனதில் ஆழமாகப் பதிந்தது.
அன்று இரவு நடந்த போட்டியை நினைத்து அவன் யோசித்தான்.
தனது நண்பர்கள் தன்னை வெறுப்பதற்குக் காரணம் தனது திறமை அல்ல… தன்னலம் தான் என்பதை புரிந்துகொண்டான்.
அடுத்த நாள் பயிற்சிக்கு வந்தபோது அனைவரும் பழைய ஜிதானையே எதிர்பார்த்தார்கள்.
ஆனால் இந்த முறை அவன் மாறியிருந்தான்.
ஒரு சிறிய வீரர் தவறு செய்தபோது கோபப்படாமல் ஊக்கப்படுத்தினான்.
பந்தை அடிக்கடி நண்பர்களிடம் பகிர ஆரம்பித்தான்.
தனியாக மகிழாமல், அனைவரின் வெற்றியையும் கொண்டாடினான்.
மெதுவாக அணியின் ஒற்றுமை திரும்பியது.
சில வாரங்கள் கழித்து இறுதிப் போட்டி வந்தது.
கடைசி சில விநாடிகளில் ஜிதானிடம் பந்து வந்தது.
அவன் கோல் அடிக்க முடியும்.
அரங்கமே அவன் பெயரை முழங்கியது.
ஆனால் அருகில் யாரும் கவனிக்காதபடி ஃபாரிஸ் காலியாக நின்றிருந்தான்.
ஒரு நொடியும் யோசிக்காமல் ஜிதான் பந்தை அவனிடம் கொடுத்தான்.
ஃபாரிஸ் அற்புதமாக கோல் அடித்தான்!
முழு அரங்கமும் கைத்தட்டலால் அதிர்ந்தது.
இந்த முறை கோப்பையை முழு அணியும் சேர்ந்து தூக்கினார்கள்.
போட்டி முடிந்தபின் லீனா மேடம் பெருமையுடன் சொன்னார்:
“தன்னையே உயர்த்திக்கொள்ளும் மனிதன் தலைவர் அல்ல… மற்றவர்களையும் உயர்த்துபவன்தான் உண்மையான தலைவர்.”
அப்போது ஜிதானுக்கு திருக்குறளின் உண்மையான அர்த்தம் புரிந்தது.
திறமை மட்டும் ஒருவரை உயர்த்தாது — பணிவும் ஒற்றுமையும் தான் உண்மையான வெற்றி.
