One afternoon, his Tamil teacher Mrs. Yazhini announced an inter-school debate competition.
“You should definitely participate, Harinath,” she encouraged.
Harinath felt excited. He spent days collecting facts, statistics, and complicated information for the debate.
Finally, competition day arrived.
As soon as he stepped onto the stage, he began speaking rapidly. Big words poured out one after another.
But the audience looked lost.
Some students whispered to each other. Even the judges struggled to follow his points.
Harinath finished nervously and returned to his seat feeling disappointed.
Later that evening, his grandfather Sivaraman called him to the terrace and softly recited a Thirukkural:
Kaṟṟaṟindhār kalvi viḷaṅgum kasaḍaṟach
soltheridhal vallār agaththu.
கற்றறிந்தார் கல்வி விளங்கும் கசடறச்
சொல்தெரிதல் வல்லார் அகத்து.
Then he explained:
“The learning of truly educated people shines brightly when they can explain ideas clearly without confusion.”
Harinath listened carefully.
Grandfather continued,
“Knowledge becomes powerful only when others can understand it.”
The next few weeks, Harinath practiced speaking differently. Instead of using difficult words, he learned to explain ideas simply. He paused calmly, used examples, and spoke clearly.
Soon, his classmates started enjoying his explanations.
A month later, another debate competition was held.
This time, Harinath spoke slowly and confidently. He explained difficult scientific ideas using simple real-life examples that everyone understood easily.
The audience listened carefully.
The judges nodded with interest.
At the end, Harinath won the “Best Speaker” award.
As his friends cheered, he smiled proudly at his grandfather.

ஒரு நாள் தமிழ் ஆசிரியர் யாழினி மேடம் பள்ளிகளுக்கிடையேயான விவாதப் போட்டியை அறிவித்தார்.
“ஹரிநாத், நீ கண்டிப்பா கலந்து கொள்ளணும்,” என்றார்.
ஹரிநாத்தும் மிகுந்த உற்சாகத்துடன் தயாரானான்.
நூல்கள், இணையதளம், குறிப்புகள் — பல இடங்களில் இருந்து தகவல்களை சேகரித்தான்.
இறுதியாக போட்டி நாள் வந்தது.
மேடையில் நின்றவுடன் அவன் மிக வேகமாக பேச ஆரம்பித்தான்.
கடினமான வார்த்தைகள் தொடர்ந்து வந்துகொண்டே இருந்தன.
ஆனால் பார்வையாளர்களின் முகத்தில் குழப்பம் தெரிந்தது.
சில மாணவர்கள் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் பார்த்துக்கொண்டனர்.
நீதிபதிகளுக்கே அவன் கருத்துகள் சரியாகப் புரியவில்லை.
பேச்சு முடிந்ததும் ஹரிநாத் சோகமாக தனது இருக்கைக்கு திரும்பினான்.
அன்று மாலை வீட்டின் மாடியில் இருந்த தாத்தா சிவராமன் மெதுவாக ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
கற்றறிந்தார் கல்வி விளங்கும் கசடறச்
சொல்தெரிதல் வல்லார் அகத்து.
பின்னர் அவர் விளக்கினார்:
“கற்ற கல்வி மற்றவர்களுக்கு தெளிவாகப் புரியும்படி சொல்லத் தெரிந்தால்தான் அதன் மதிப்பு வெளிப்படும்.”
அந்த வார்த்தைகள் ஹரிநாத்தை யோசிக்க வைத்தது.
அதன்பிறகு அவன் பேசும் முறையை மாற்ற ஆரம்பித்தான்.
கடினமான வார்த்தைகளுக்கு பதிலாக எளிய உதாரணங்களை பயன்படுத்தினான்.
அமைதியாகவும் தெளிவாகவும் பேசப் பயிற்சி செய்தான்.
சில வாரங்களில் நண்பர்களே அவனிடம் சந்தேகங்களை கேட்டு புரிந்துகொள்ள ஆரம்பித்தார்கள்.
ஒரு மாதம் கழித்து மீண்டும் ஒரு விவாதப் போட்டி நடந்தது.
இந்த முறை ஹரிநாத் மிகவும் அமைதியாக பேசினான்.
கடினமான அறிவியல் கருத்துகளையும் எளிய வாழ்க்கை உதாரணங்களுடன் விளக்கினான்.
முழு அரங்கமும் கவனமாக கேட்டது.
நீதிபதிகள் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் தலையசைத்தார்கள்.
போட்டி முடிவில் ஹரிநாத் “சிறந்த பேச்சாளர்” விருதை வென்றான்.
நண்பர்கள் கைத்தட்டியபோது ஹரிநாத் பெருமையுடன் தாத்தாவை பார்த்தான்.
அப்போது அவனுக்கு திருக்குறளின் உண்மையான அர்த்தம் புரிந்தது.
கல்வி என்பது தெரிந்திருப்பதில் மட்டும் இல்லை… மற்றவர்களுக்கு தெளிவாகப் புரிய வைப்பதிலும் இருக்கிறது.
