At the next practice, heavy rain poured down, turning the field into slippery mud. Liam’s group kept slipping, arguing, and blaming each other. Frustrated, they began to lose hope.
From the bench, Sanjana gathered the other overlooked players.
“Falling is okay. Let’s get up and play together!” she encouraged.
Ignoring the pain in her ankle, she passed the ball with precision. She shared teamwork strategies her father had taught her from Indian matches he admired. She lifted spirits, turned mistakes into laughter, and united the team.
Soon, they were scoring brilliant goals.
At the end of the tournament, the coach made an announcement:
“Sanjana is the new co-captain!”

அந்த இரவு, உணவு மேசையில் அவள் கண்களில் இருந்த துயரத்தை கவனித்த அம்மா டாக்டர் லட்சுமி மெதுவாகப் பேசினாள். அவள் தனது பழைய தமிழ் புத்தகத்தில் இருந்த ஒரு குறளை எடுத்துக் காட்டினாள்.

“பண்பு இல்லையெனில் மேல் இருந்தும் மேலல்லர். நல்ல மனம் இருந்தால் கீழே இருந்தாலும் அவர்கள் சிறியவர்கள் அல்ல.”
அந்த வார்த்தைகள் சஞ்சனாவின் மனதில் ஒரு புதிய உற்சாகத்தை ஏற்படுத்தின.
அடுத்த பயிற்சி நாளில் மழை கொட்டித் தீர்ந்தது. மைதானம் சேறும் சதுப்புமாக மாறியது. லியத்தின் அணி தடுமாறி, ஒருவர்மேல் ஒருவர் குற்றம் சாட்டத் தொடங்கினர்.
“பெஞ்ச்” வீராங்கனையாக இருந்த சஞ்சனா அமைதியாக இருந்த வீரர்களை ஒன்றாகச் சேர்த்தாள்.
“விழுந்தாலும் எழுந்து விளையாடலாம்!” என்று உற்சாகப்படுத்தினாள்.
கால் வலி இருந்தாலும் அவள் துல்லியமான பாஸ் கொடுத்தாள். இந்தியாவில் அப்பா கற்றுக் கொடுத்த அணித் திறன்களையும் நண்பர்களுக்கு பகிர்ந்தாள்.
அவர்கள் ஒன்றுபட்டு விளையாடத் தொடங்கினர். அசத்தலான கோல்கள் அடித்தனர்.
போட்டியின் முடிவில் பயிற்சியாளர் அறிவித்தார்:
“சஞ்சனா — இணை அணித்தலைவி!”
அணி டூர்னமென்ட்டை வென்றது. லியம் கூட வந்து கைகொட்டி,
“நீ தான் உண்மையான ஸ்டார்!” என்றான்.
அம்மா லட்சுமி மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் சஞ்சனாவை அணைத்துக் கொண்டாள்.
“உன் தொடக்கம் எங்கிருந்தது என்பது முக்கியமில்லை. உன் பண்பே உன்னை உயர்த்தியது,” என்றாள்.
சஞ்சனா புன்னகைத்தாள். இப்போது அவளுக்கு புரிந்தது —
