One afternoon, 14-year-old Rithulan watched a first-grade boy fall face-first into the muddy water while carrying his school bag.
The little boy sat there crying helplessly.
Something about that moment stayed in Rithulan’s mind.
That evening, he gathered a few friends.
“We should build a small wooden walkway across the flooded path.”
Everyone became excited immediately.
“Super idea!”
“Let’s start tomorrow!”
But Rithulan’s grandmother, who overheard the conversation, quietly interrupted.
“Before starting anything important, first think fully.”
Then she softly recited:
முடிவும் இடையூறும் முற்றியாங்கு எய்தும்
படுபயனும் பார்த்துச் செயல்.”

“Think about the final result. Think about obstacles. Think about whether the effort will truly help people in the long run.”
That night, instead of rushing into work, the group carefully studied the flooded area.
They discovered several problems.
The water current became stronger during heavy rain.
Wooden planks alone would float away.
The mud underneath was unstable.
So they changed their plan completely.
With help from a local carpenter, they designed a narrow raised tunnel walkway using old metal pipes, stones, and wooden boards fixed firmly into the ground.
It took nearly three weeks.
Rain interrupted work many times.
They got tired.
Some children even mocked them.
“By the time you finish, summer will come!”
Still, they continued patiently.
Finally, the tunnel walkway was completed.
The next week, monsoon rain returned heavily.
Water rushed below the raised path.
But children safely walked above it laughing and chatting.
Even elderly people began using it daily.
One morning, the small first-grade boy who had fallen earlier crossed safely while holding his sister’s hand.
He waved happily at Rithulan.
At that moment, Rithulan finally understood the Kural deeply.

மாணவர்கள் முழங்கால் அளவு சேற்றுக்குள் நடந்து பள்ளிக்கு செல்ல வேண்டியிருக்கும்.
பலர் வழுக்கி விழுவார்கள்.
சிலர் தேர்வுகளையே தவறவிடுவார்கள்.
சில குழந்தைகள் மழைக்காலத்தில் பள்ளிக்கே வராமல் இருப்பார்கள்.
ஒரு நாள் பதினான்கு வயது ரிதுலன் ஒரு சிறிய முதல் வகுப்பு மாணவன் சேற்றில் முகம் குப்புற விழுவதைக் கண்டான்.
புத்தகப்பை முழுக்க சேறு.
குழந்தை அழுதபடி எழ முடியாமல் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தது.
அந்த காட்சி ரிதுலனின் மனதில் பதிந்துவிட்டது.
அன்று மாலை அவன் தனது நண்பர்களை கூட்டினான்.
“இந்த பாதைக்கு மேல் மரத்தால ஒரு நடைபாதை கட்டலாம்.”
நண்பர்கள் உடனே உற்சாகமானார்கள்.
“சூப்பர் ஐடியா!”
“நாளைக்கே ஆரம்பிக்கலாம்!”
அப்போது அருகில் இருந்த பாட்டி அமைதியாக சொன்னார்:
“முக்கியமான வேலைகளில் அவசரம் போதாது.”
பின்னர் மெதுவாக ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
முடிவும் இடையூறும் முற்றியாங்கு எய்தும்
படுபயனும் பார்த்துச் செயல்.
ரிதுலன் அமைதியாக கேட்டான்.
பாட்டி விளக்கினார்:
“வேலையை ஆரம்பிப்பதற்கு முன் அதன் முடிவு என்ன, நடுவில் வரும் சிரமங்கள் என்ன, அது உண்மையிலேயே நீண்ட நாட்களுக்கு பயன் தருமா — எல்லாம் யோசிக்கணும்.”
அந்த இரவு நண்பர்கள் உடனே வேலை தொடங்கவில்லை.
முதலில் அந்த இடத்தை நன்றாக ஆய்வு செய்தார்கள்.
மழை அதிகமாக வந்தால் தண்ணீர் வேகமாக ஓடும்.
மர பலகைகள் மட்டும் வைத்தால் அடித்து போய்விடும்.
கீழே இருந்த சேறும் பலவீனமாக இருந்தது.
அதனால் திட்டத்தை முழுவதும் மாற்றினார்கள்.
ஊரில் இருந்த தச்சர் அண்ணாவின் உதவியுடன் பழைய இரும்புக் குழாய்கள், கற்கள், மர பலகைகள் வைத்து உயரமான நடைபாதை அமைக்க முடிவு செய்தார்கள்.
வேலைக்கு மூன்று வாரங்கள் ஆனது.
மழை இடையூறு செய்தது.
சோர்வும் வந்தது.
சிலர் கிண்டலும் செய்தார்கள்.
“நீங்க முடிக்குறதுக்குள்ள கோடை வந்துரும்!”
ஆனால் அவர்கள் பொறுமையாக வேலை செய்தார்கள்.
இறுதியாக நடைபாதை முடிந்தது.
அடுத்த வாரமே கனமழை வந்தது.
தண்ணீர் கீழே வேகமாக ஓடியது.
ஆனால் குழந்தைகள் மேலே பாதுகாப்பாக சிரித்தபடி நடந்துசென்றார்கள்.
முதியவர்கள்கூட அதை தினமும் பயன்படுத்த ஆரம்பித்தார்கள்.
ஒரு காலை முன்பு சேற்றில் விழுந்த அந்தச் சிறிய மாணவன் தனது அக்காவின் கையை பிடித்தபடி பாதுகாப்பாக அந்த பாதையை கடந்தான்.
ரிதுலனை பார்த்து சிரித்தபடி கையை அசைத்தான்.
அந்த நொடியில்தான் ரிதுலனுக்கு குறளின் ஆழமான அர்த்தம் புரிந்தது.
நல்ல எண்ணம் மட்டும் போதாது.
தூரம் யோசித்துத் திட்டமிடுவதுதான் உண்மையான உதவியை உருவாக்கும்.
