The district children’s art festival had one exciting challenge—every participant had an hour to paint the theme, “A World I Dream Of.” Twelve-year-old Anika carefully mixed her colours and had almost completed a beautiful painting of children planting trees together. The judges had already begun walking around the hall, and she knew she had a good chance of winning.
Just then, she heard a quiet sob from the next table. A seven-year-old boy had accidentally knocked over a jar of water, ruining his painting. He stared at the wet paper, trying hard not to cry. The volunteers were busy helping elsewhere, and the timer showed only ten minutes left.
Anika looked at her nearly finished painting. If she stayed where she was, she could add the final details and perhaps win the competition. Instead, she carried her paintbrushes to the little boy’s table. Together they quickly sketched a new picture—a bright rainbow over a small village. Anika encouraged him to paint while she mixed colours and showed him simple tricks to finish on time.
When the results were announced, Anika didn’t hear her name. Another child won the first prize. As she packed her brushes, the little boy ran towards her, holding his participation certificate with both hands. “This is my first competition,” he said with a wide smile. “I thought I would go home with nothing. Thank you for helping me finish.”
Walking home, Anika realised something surprising. She had missed a trophy, but she hadn’t missed happiness. The joy of helping someone stand up again was far greater than any prize she could have carried home.

அப்போது அருகிலிருந்த மேசையில் இருந்து மெதுவான அழுகை சத்தம் கேட்டது. ஏழு வயது சிறுவன் ஒருவன் தவறுதலாக தண்ணீர் கோப்பையை தனது ஓவியத்தின் மீது சாய்த்துவிட்டான். முழு ஓவியமும் கெட்டுப்போயிருந்தது. என்ன செய்வது என்று தெரியாமல் அவன் கண்ணீரை அடக்கிக்கொண்டு நின்றான். உதவ வந்த தன்னார்வலர்கள் வேறு இடத்தில் இருந்தனர். போட்டி முடிய இன்னும் பத்து நிமிடங்களே இருந்தன.
அனிகா தனது ஓவியத்தை ஒரு கணம் பார்த்தாள். இன்னும் சில நிறங்களைச் சேர்த்தால் அது இன்னும் அழகாக இருக்கும். ஆனால் அடுத்த நொடியில் அவள் தனது வண்ணங்களையும் தூரிகைகளையும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு அந்தச் சிறுவனின் அருகில் அமர்ந்தாள். இருவரும் சேர்ந்து ஒரு புதிய ஓவியத்தை வேகமாக வரையத் தொடங்கினர். சிறுவன் வானவில்லையும் வீடுகளையும் வரைந்தான்; அனிகா அவனுக்கு வண்ணங்களைத் தயாரித்து, எளிய முறையில் ஓவியத்தை முடிக்க உதவினாள்.
முடிவுகள் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டபோது அனிகாவின் பெயர் வெற்றியாளர்களில் இல்லை. ஆனால் சான்றிதழை கையில் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு ஓடிவந்த அந்தச் சிறுவன், “அக்கா, நான் வெறுங்கையோடு வீட்டுக்குப் போவேன் என்று நினைத்தேன். நீங்க இருந்ததால்தான் என் ஓவியம் முடிந்தது,” என்று சிரித்தான். அந்த ஒரு சிரிப்பைப் பார்த்தபோது, எந்தக் கோப்பையும் தர முடியாத மகிழ்ச்சி அனிகாவின் மனதில் மலர்ந்தது. அன்றுதான் அவள் உணர்ந்தாள்.
