அகமதாபாத் நகரத்தின் பரபரப்பான சூழலில் 13 வயது ஆர்யன் தனது குடும்பத்துடன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். அவன் அப்பா நேர்மையான தொழிலதிபர்.
“நல்ல செயல்கள் இல்லாமல் வரும் பணம் நீண்ட நாள் நிலைக்காது,” என்று அவர் அடிக்கடி சொல்லுவார்.
ஒரு நாள் பூங்காவில் நடந்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது, ஆர்யன் தரையில் கிடந்த ஒரு பணப்பையை கண்டான். அதை யாருக்கும் சொல்லாமல் எடுத்துக்கொண்டான். உள்ளே நிறைய பணம் இருந்தது.
“இதனால் நான் எனக்கு பிடித்த எல்லாவற்றையும் வாங்கிக்கொள்ளலாம்!” என்று அவன் மகிழ்ந்தான்.
அவன் அந்த பணத்தை பயன்படுத்தி காமிக்ஸ், சாப்பாடு, சிறிய பொருட்கள் வாங்கி நண்பர்களிடம் பெருமை பேசினான். ஆனால் மனதுக்குள் ஒரு குற்ற உணர்வு அவனை வாட்டியது.
சில நாட்களில் பள்ளியில் “சிறு வியாபார விழா” நடத்தப்பட்டது. மாணவர்கள் தங்கள் சொந்த கடைகளை அமைத்து பொருட்களை விற்க வேண்டும்.
ஆர்யன் அந்த பணத்தை பயன்படுத்தி வண்ணமயமான பொருட்களை வாங்கி கடை அமைத்தான். ஆரம்பத்தில் விற்பனை நன்றாக இருந்தது. ஆனால் அவன் அதிக விலைக்கு விற்றான். பொருட்களின் தரமும் சரியாக இல்லை.
வாடிக்கையாளர்கள் குறை கூற ஆரம்பித்தனர். விற்பனை குறைந்து போனது. சிலர் அவனை நம்பாமல் விலகினர்.
ஆர்யன் பதற்றமடைந்தான்.
அப்போது அவனுக்கு அப்பாவின் வார்த்தைகள் நினைவுக்கு வந்தது.
அவன் உடனே தனது தவறை ஆசிரியரிடம் ஒப்புக்கொண்டான். பணப்பையை திருப்பிக் கொடுக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்தான்.
பின்னர் அவன் தனது கடையை மாற்றினான்.
நேர்மையாக விற்க ஆரம்பித்தான். பொருட்களை சரியான விலையில் கொடுத்தான். சில பணத்தை தேவையுள்ளவர்களுக்கு தானமாக வழங்கினான். நண்பர்களுக்கும் உதவினான்.
மெல்ல மெல்ல மக்கள் அவனை நம்ப ஆரம்பித்தனர். அவன் கடை மீண்டும் சிறப்பாக நடந்தது.
இறுதியில் ஆர்யன் “நேர்மையான வியாபாரி” என்ற விருதை பெற்றான்.
அப்பா மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
செயற்பால செய்யாத இவறியான் செல்வம்
உயற்பால தன்னிற்கெடும்.
அவர் விளக்கினார்:
“நல்ல செயல்கள் இல்லாமல் வரும் செல்வம் நீடிக்காது. அது விரைவில் அழிந்து போகும்.”
அந்த நாளிலிருந்து ஆர்யன் நேர்மையாக வாழ முடிவு செய்தான். நல்ல செயல்களால் தான் உண்மையான செல்வம் கிடைக்கும் என்பதை புரிந்துகொண்டான்.
