But there was one student who constantly challenged him — Mateo from a rival school.
Before the city finals, Ishaan proudly told everyone,
“I already know Mateo’s style. He always attacks early. Beating him will be easy.”
His teammates admired his confidence, but his grandfather quietly smiled.
That evening, while arranging chess pieces at home, Grandpa Ravi recited a Thirukkural:
Kādala kādal aṟiyāmai uykkirpin
Ēdhila ēdhilār nūl.
காதல காதல் அறியாமை உய்க்கிற்பின்
ஏதில ஏதிலார் நூல்.
Then he explained,
“If you want your plans to succeed, don’t reveal your excitement or intentions to your rivals.”
Ishaan frowned.
“But I was only being confident!”
Grandpa gently replied,
“Too much confidence shown outside becomes useful information for the opponent.”
Those words stayed in Ishaan’s mind.
The next day at practice, Ishaan stopped boasting about his strategies. Instead, he quietly studied different game openings and practiced defensive moves secretly with his coach.
During the finals, Mateo arrived looking relaxed and confident. He expected Ishaan to attack aggressively like always.
But the match surprised him.
Ishaan played calmly and patiently. Instead of rushing forward, he slowly trapped Mateo’s queen using a strategy nobody expected.
Mateo became nervous.
Within minutes, Ishaan checkmated him beautifully.
The entire hall erupted in applause.
After the match, Mateo smiled and said,
“You completely changed your style. I couldn’t predict anything!”
Ishaan laughed softly.
Later that night, Grandpa Ravi proudly said,
“A wise person protects plans quietly until success arrives.”
Ishaan finally understood the Kural’s wisdom. Sometimes silence is stronger than showing off.

சிங்கப்பூரில் பதிமூன்று வயது இஷான் தனது பள்ளியில் சிறந்த சதுரங்க வீரராக அறியப்பட்டான். பல போட்டிகளில் வெற்றி பெற்றிருந்ததால் இந்த வருடம் பள்ளி அணியின் கேப்டனாக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டான்.
ஆனால் அவனுக்கு ஒரு பெரிய போட்டியாளர் இருந்தான் — மற்றொரு பள்ளியில் படிக்கும் மேத்தியோ.
நகர அளவிலான இறுதிப்போட்டிக்கு முன், இஷான் நண்பர்களிடம் பெருமையாகச் சொன்னான்:
“மேத்தியோ எப்படி விளையாடுவான் என்று எனக்கு நல்லா தெரியும். அவனை ஜெயிக்க ரொம்ப ஈசியா இருக்கும்!”
அவனுடைய நண்பர்கள் ஆச்சரியமாக பார்த்தார்கள். ஆனால் அருகில் இருந்த தாத்தா ரவி மட்டும் மெதுவாக சிரித்தார்.
அன்று இரவு வீட்டில் சதுரங்க காய்களை அடுக்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது தாத்தா ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
காதல காதல் அறியாமை உய்க்கிற்பின்
ஏதில ஏதிலார் நூல்.
பின்னர் அவர் விளக்கினார்:
“நம்ம ஆசை, திட்டம், உற்சாகம் எல்லாத்தையும் எதிரிகளுக்குத் தெரியவிட்டால், அது அவர்களுக்கே உதவியாகி விடும்.”
இஷான் யோசித்தான்.
“நான் சும்மா நம்பிக்கையோட தான் பேசினேன் தாத்தா…”
தாத்தா சிரித்தபடி,
“அதிகமாக வெளியில் காட்டப்படும் நம்பிக்கை கூட எதிரிக்கு தகவலாக மாறிடும்,” என்றார்.
அந்த வார்த்தைகள் இஷானின் மனதில் பதிந்தது.
அடுத்த நாள் முதல் அவன் தனது திட்டங்களை யாரிடமும் பெருமையாக சொல்லவில்லை. அமைதியாக பல புதிய நகர்வுகளை பயிற்சி செய்ய ஆரம்பித்தான்.
குறிப்பாக பாதுகாப்பு முறைகளையும் பொறுமையான ஆட்ட முறைகளையும் ரகசியமாக கற்றுக்கொண்டான்.
இறுதிப் போட்டி நாள் வந்தது.
மேத்தியோ மிகவும் நம்பிக்கையுடன் வந்தான். இஷான் எப்போதும் போல வேகமாக தாக்குவான் என்று நினைத்தான்.
ஆனால் இந்த முறை இஷான் மிகவும் அமைதியாக விளையாடினான்.
அவசரப்படாமல் மெதுவாக காய்களை நகர்த்தினான்.
சில நிமிடங்களில் யாரும் எதிர்பார்க்காத ஒரு நகர்வில் மேத்தியோவின் ராணியை சிக்கவைத்தான்.
மேத்தியோ பதட்டமடைந்தான்.
சிறிது நேரத்திலேயே இஷான் அழகான “செக் மேட்” கொடுத்து வெற்றி பெற்றான்.
முழு அரங்கமும் கைத்தட்டலால் முழங்கியது.
போட்டி முடிந்தபின் மேத்தியோ சிரித்தபடி,
“இந்த முறை உன் ஆட்டத்தை கணிக்கவே முடியல!” என்றான்.
இஷான் மெதுவாக சிரித்தான்.
அன்று இரவு தாத்தா ரவி பெருமையுடன் சொன்னார்:
“வெற்றி பெறும் வரை திட்டங்களை அமைதியாக பாதுகாக்கத் தெரிந்தவன்தான் புத்திசாலி.”
அப்போது இஷானுக்கு திருக்குறளின் உண்மையான அர்த்தம் புரிந்தது.
சில நேரங்களில் அமைதியே மிகப் பெரிய வலிமை.

வெற்றி பெற வேண்டும் என்றால், நம்முடைய திட்டங்களையும் உற்சாகத்தையும் எதிரிகளிடம் வெளிப்படுத்தக் கூடாது.
