The Clay Lamp

In a village near Kumbakonam, the school announced a Clay Lamp Festival. Every child had to shape a lamp by hand, dry it carefully, and decorate it for the evening exhibition. Twelve-year-old Vaidehi was excited because it was her first time working with clay.

After two days of patient work, her lamp looked beautiful. Just before the exhibition, however, a tiny crack appeared along its side. “Don’t worry,” her friends said. “Just paint over it. Nobody will notice.” For a moment, Vaidehi was tempted. It would save time, and her lamp would still look perfect.

Then she remembered her grandmother’s words: “A beautiful thing is not the one that hides its weakness, but the one that is made strong.” Instead of taking the easy path, Vaidehi gently repaired the crack with fresh clay and waited for it to dry again. She lost precious decorating time, but she chose strength over appearance.

That evening, the hall glowed with hundreds of handmade lamps. As the flames grew warmer, a few brightly decorated lamps cracked and went out. Vaidehi’s simple lamp continued to shine steadily until the very end.

The art teacher smiled and said, “Today you completed your work the right way, not the easy way.” She then recited:

Kaḍaikkoṭkach seythakkadhu āṇmai idaikkoṭkin
eṟṟā viḻumam tarum.

Thiruvalluvar reminds us that true determination is not merely beginning a task—it is completing it with integrity and perseverance. Vaidehi realised that lasting success comes from finishing well, even when nobody is watching.

Moral

True courage is completing what we begin with honesty and care. The strongest work is built on integrity, not shortcuts.

Kaḍaikkoṭkach seythakkadhu āṇmai idaikkoṭkin
eṟṟā viḻumam tarum.

Breaking it down

(Until the very end)
(Completing what is undertaken)
(True determination)
(If abandoned halfway)
(Lasting regret)
(Will bring)

Trivia
