In the town of Kumbakonam stood an old railway station building that had been abandoned for many years. But fourteen-year-old Aadhavan saw something different whenever he looked at the building.
One day, while researching local history for a school project, he discovered photographs of the station from nearly a hundred years ago. It had once been the pride of the town, welcoming travelers from across the region. Looking at those pictures, Aadhavan imagined how wonderful it would be if the building could become a community reading center and history museum for children.
Many people liked the idea but didn’t believe it could happen. The building needed repairs, permissions, volunteers, and funding. Some adults smiled kindly and said, “It’s a nice dream.” Others told him to focus on something easier. Yet Aadhavan did not let go of his vision. He carefully wrote down every step that would be needed and began working on them one by one.
First, he gathered information about the building’s history. Then he convinced classmates to help create presentations about its importance. The students organized exhibitions, met local officials, and collected old photographs from residents. Months passed. Whenever one obstacle was solved, another appeared. But Aadhavan remained patient and focused on the goal he had imagined from the beginning.
After nearly two years of effort, permission was finally granted to restore part of the building. Volunteers joined the project, local businesses donated materials, and skilled workers offered their help. Slowly, the old station came back to life. A reading room was opened, historical displays were installed, and children began visiting every weekend.
During the opening ceremony, Aadhavan’s history teacher proudly recited:

திண்ணியர் ஆகப் பெறின்.

கும்பகோணத்தில் பல ஆண்டுகளாக பயன்பாடின்றி இருந்த ஒரு பழைய ரயில் நிலையக் கட்டிடம் இருந்தது. ஒருகாலத்தில் பயணிகளால் பரபரப்பாக இருந்த அந்த இடம், இப்போது தூசி படிந்து சிதிலமடைந்து கிடந்தது. பெரும்பாலான மக்கள் அதை கவனிக்காமலேயே கடந்து செல்வார்கள். ஆனால் பதினான்கு வயது ஆதவனுக்கு அந்த கட்டிடத்தைப் பார்க்கும் போதெல்லாம் வேறு ஒரு காட்சி மனதில் தோன்றும்.
பள்ளி வரலாற்றுத் திட்டத்திற்காக தகவல்கள் தேடியபோது, நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு எடுக்கப்பட்ட அந்த நிலையத்தின் புகைப்படங்களை அவன் பார்த்தான். அப்போது அது நகரத்தின் பெருமையாக இருந்தது. அந்தப் படங்களைப் பார்த்த ஆதவன், “இந்த இடம் குழந்தைகளுக்கான வாசிப்பு மையமாகவும் சிறிய வரலாற்று அருங்காட்சியகமாகவும் மாறினால் எப்படி இருக்கும்?” என்று கற்பனை செய்தான்.
அவனுடைய யோசனை பலருக்கு பிடித்திருந்தாலும், அது நிஜமாகும் என்று யாரும் நம்பவில்லை. அனுமதிகள் வேண்டும், பணம் வேண்டும், தன்னார்வலர்கள் வேண்டும், பழுது பார்க்க வேண்டும். “நல்ல கனவு தான்” என்று சிலர் சொன்னார்கள். ஆனால் ஆதவன் அந்த எண்ணத்தை விடவில்லை. செய்ய வேண்டிய வேலைகளை ஒவ்வொன்றாக பட்டியலிட்டு, அமைதியாக முயற்சியைத் தொடங்கினான்.
முதலில் அந்த கட்டிடத்தின் வரலாற்றை சேகரித்தான். நண்பர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து கண்காட்சி நடத்தினான். ஊர் மக்களிடமிருந்து பழைய புகைப்படங்களையும் தகவல்களையும் பெற்றான். அதிகாரிகளைச் சந்தித்தான். ஒரு பிரச்சினை தீர்ந்தால் மற்றொன்று வந்தது. இருந்தாலும் அவன் மனம் தளரவில்லை. ஆரம்பத்தில் நினைத்த இலக்கை மட்டுமே நினைத்து தொடர்ந்து உழைத்தான்.
இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு முயற்சிக்கு பலன் கிடைத்தது. கட்டிடத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியை புதுப்பிக்க அனுமதி கிடைத்தது. ஊர்மக்கள் உதவினர். சில நிறுவனங்கள் பொருட்களை வழங்கின. மெதுவாக அந்த பழைய நிலையம் புதிய உயிர் பெற்றது. வாசிப்பு அறை திறக்கப்பட்டது. வரலாற்றுப் பொருட்கள் காட்சிக்கு வைக்கப்பட்டன. வாரந்தோறும் குழந்தைகள் அங்கு வந்து புத்தகங்கள் படிக்கத் தொடங்கினர்.
திறப்பு விழா நாளில், ஆதவனின் வரலாற்று ஆசிரியர் பெருமையுடன் இந்தக் குறளைச் சொன்னார்:

குழந்தைகள் சிரித்தபடி அந்த வாசிப்பு மையத்தை நிரப்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். அவர்களைப் பார்த்த ஆதவன், உறுதியுடன் பிடித்துக் கொண்ட ஒரு நல்ல எண்ணம் எவ்வளவு பெரிய மாற்றத்தை உருவாக்க முடியும் என்பதை உணர்ந்தான்.
