In Karaikudi, 12-year-old Dharshan loved festival nights more than anything.
Every year during the temple celebration, the streets filled with music, lights, and colorful paper lanterns.
This year, Dharshan had one big dream.
He wanted to make the largest sky lantern in town.
For an entire week, he worked carefully with bamboo sticks, thin paper, and bright paints.
His little sister Nivetha watched in admiration.
“It looks like a flying palace!” she said.
Dharshan proudly smiled.
On the final evening before the festival, their grandfather warned him:
“The wind will grow stronger after midnight. If you want the lantern to fly safely, launch it before the late-night breeze.”
But Dharshan didn’t listen seriously.
“There’s plenty of time,” he said lazily.
Instead of preparing the lantern properly, he wandered around the festival eating cotton candy and watching street magic shows.
Hours passed.
Finally, very late at night, Dharshan rushed home.
The wind had already become fierce. Still, he stubbornly dragged the giant lantern outside. Nivetha looked worried.
“Anna… maybe we should wait till tomorrow?”
But Dharshan quickly lit the flame.
For one beautiful second, the lantern rose into the dark sky.
Then suddenly—
WHOOSH!
A strong gust of wind spun it sideways.
The bamboo frame snapped.
Bright paper pieces scattered across the street like giant butterflies. Children gasped. Dharshan stood frozen. A whole week of work had vanished in seconds.
Later that night, Grandpa sat beside him quietly and recited:
Thūnguga thūngich cheyaṟpāla thūngarka
thūngāthu seyyum vinai.
தூங்குக தூங்கிச் செயற்பால தூங்கற்க
தூங்காது செய்யும் வினை.
Then he explained gently:
“Some actions can wait patiently. But some actions must be done without delay. Wisdom is knowing the difference.”
Dharshan stared at the torn lantern pieces silently.
The next evening, he built a smaller lantern with Nivetha’s help.
This time, he prepared early.
Before the winds changed, they released it together.
The lantern floated steadily above the glowing temple streets.
As it disappeared into the night sky, Dharshan smiled softly.
That day, he learned something important.
Not every failure happens because we are weak.
Sometimes, we simply wait too long.

Delay only the actions that can wait; never delay actions that must be done immediately.

காரைக்குடியில் பன்னிரண்டு வயது தர்ஷனுக்கு திருவிழா இரவுகள் என்றால் மிகவும் பிடிக்கும்.
ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் கோவில் திருவிழா வந்தாலே தெருக்கள் முழுக்க இசை, விளக்குகள், வண்ணக் காகித அலங்காரங்கள் என ஜொலித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும்.
இந்த வருடம் தர்ஷனுக்கு ஒரு பெரிய ஆசை இருந்தது.
ஊரிலேயே பெரிய வான்விளக்கை உருவாக்க வேண்டும்.
ஒரு வாரம் முழுக்க மூங்கில் குச்சிகள், மெலிந்த காகிதங்கள், வண்ணப் பூச்சுகள் வைத்து அவன் மிக கவனமாக வேலை செய்தான்.
அவன் தங்கை நிவேதா ஆச்சரியமாக பார்த்தாள்.
“அண்ணா… இது பறக்கும் அரண்மனை மாதிரி இருக்கு!” என்றாள்.
தர்ஷன் பெருமையாக சிரித்தான்.
திருவிழாவுக்கு முந்தைய இரவு தாத்தா எச்சரித்தார்:
“நள்ளிரவுக்குப் பிறகு காற்று வேகமா அடிக்கும். விளக்கை விடணும்னா அதுக்கு முன்னாடியே விடணும்.”
ஆனால் தர்ஷன் அதை கவனமாக எடுத்துக்கொள்ளவில்லை.
“நேரம் இருக்கு தாத்தா,” என்றான் சோம்பேறித்தனமாக.
விளக்கை தயாராக வைத்துக்கொள்ளாமல் திருவிழா முழுக்க சுற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.
பஞ்சுமிட்டாய் சாப்பிட்டான்.
மாயாஜாலம் பார்த்தான்.
நண்பர்களுடன் விளையாடினான்.
நேரம் போனதே தெரியவில்லை.
இரவு மிகவும் ஆகிவிட்டபிறகு அவன் வீட்டிற்கு ஓடிவந்தான்.
அப்போது காற்று பலமாக வீச ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டது.
இன்னும் பிடிவாதமாக அவன் பெரிய விளக்கை வெளியே எடுத்தான்.
நிவேதா கவலையுடன்,
“அண்ணா… நாளைக்கு விடலாமே?” என்றாள்.
ஆனால் தர்ஷன் உடனே தீ ஏற்றிவிட்டான்.
ஒரு நொடிக்கு அந்த வான்விளக்கு அழகாக மேலே எழுந்தது.
அடுத்த நொடியில்—
வீஷ்ஷ்ஷ்!
பலமான காற்று அதை சுழற்றியது.
மூங்கில் சட்டம் உடைந்தது.
வண்ணக் காகிதங்கள் தெரு முழுக்க பறந்தன.
குழந்தைகள் அதிர்ச்சியாக பார்த்தார்கள்.
தர்ஷன் அங்கேயே அமைதியாக நின்றான்.
ஒரு வார உழைப்பு சில நொடிகளில் நொறுங்கிவிட்டது.
அன்று இரவு தாத்தா அவன் அருகில் அமர்ந்து மெதுவாக ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
தூங்குக தூங்கிச் செயற்பால தூங்கற்க
தூங்காது செய்யும் வினை.
பின்னர் விளக்கினார்:
“சில வேலைகளை பொறுமையா செய்யலாம். ஆனா சில வேலைகளை தாமதிக்கக் கூடாது. எதை எப்போது செய்யணும்னு தெரிஞ்சிருக்கணும்.”
தர்ஷன் அமைதியாக கிழிந்த காகிதங்களை பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.
அடுத்த நாள் மாலை நிவேதாவுடன் சேர்ந்து ஒரு சிறிய வான்விளக்கு செய்தான்.
இந்த முறை அவன் முன்பே தயாராக இருந்தான்.
காற்று மாறுவதற்கு முன்னாடியே இருவரும் சேர்ந்து விளக்கை பறக்கவிட்டார்கள்.
அது மெதுவாக கோவில் தெருக்களின் மேலே உயர்ந்து சென்றது.
வானத்தில் மறையும் அந்த விளக்கை பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த தர்ஷன் மெதுவாக சிரித்தான்.
அந்த நாள் அவனுக்கு ஒரு உண்மை புரிந்தது.
சில நேரங்களில் தோல்வி திறமையின்மையால் வராது.
சரியான நேரத்தில் செயல் செய்யாததால்தான் வரும்.
