The Unused Concert Ticket

The city music hall in Chennai was hosting a children’s orchestra concert, and tickets had sold out weeks in advance. Twelve-year-old Diya had been waiting for this day because it was her first chance to hear a live orchestra perform.

As she entered the hall, an usher accidentally handed her two tickets instead of one. Her friend whispered, “Keep the extra ticket! Maybe someone else can sit with us.” The hall was crowded, and no one seemed to notice the mistake.

Just before the concert began, Diya saw a young boy standing near the entrance with tears in his eyes. His father had travelled from another town, but their ticket had been misplaced. They were pleading with the staff, hoping a seat might become available.

Diya immediately walked back to the usher and returned the extra ticket. Within minutes, the boy and his father were guided to their seats. During the final performance, the boy turned around with a grateful smile and quietly waved at Diya.

Walking home, Diya remembered a Thirukkural her grandfather often recited:

Seppam Udaiyavan Aakkam Sidhaivindri
Echchaththirku Emaappu Udaiththu

Her grandfather had explained that honesty is not only about money or possessions. Every truthful choice becomes a treasure that protects our character and leaves behind a good name. Diya realised that returning a ticket had cost her nothing, but it had given another family an unforgettable memory.

Moral

Honesty often means giving back what is not ours. The trust we earn through truthful actions is a lasting treasure.
