The Umbrella on the Bus

One rainy evening in Chennai, twelve-year-old Adhi was waiting for the bus after his tuition class. The sky was dark, and rain was pouring heavily. He had brought a new umbrella that his father had bought for him that morning, and he held it carefully so it would not get damaged.

When the bus arrived, everyone rushed inside. Adhi found a seat near the window. A few minutes later, he noticed an elderly man standing near the entrance. The man had no umbrella and was completely wet from the rain. Adhi thought about getting up and offering him his seat, but he was tired after tuition. “Maybe someone else will help him,” he thought.

At the next stop, the elderly man got down. Through the window, Adhi saw him standing near the bus stop, trying to protect himself from the rain with a small newspaper. Suddenly, Adhi remembered that his mother had packed an extra umbrella in his school bag that morning. Without thinking twice, he got off the bus and ran towards the man.

“Uncle, please take this,” Adhi said, handing him the umbrella. The man looked surprised and asked, “But how will you go home?” Adhi smiled and replied, “My house is only two streets away. I can run.” The man accepted the umbrella with a grateful smile.

Adhi reached home completely soaked. When his mother asked where his umbrella was, he told her what had happened. She smiled and said, “You may have lost an umbrella today, but you gained something that will stay with you much longer.” Adhi understood that sometimes we keep waiting for the “right time” to do something good, even when the opportunity is already standing in front of us.

Do not postpone doing good by thinking that there will always be another opportunity. A good deed done today becomes a lasting companion in life.

Moral

We often think we can help someone tomorrow, when we have more time or fewer problems. But kindness is most valuable when we act at the moment it is needed. Even a small good deed can leave a lasting mark on our character.
