When a public library opened in Mysuru, people were amazed by one unusual feature—there were no locks on the bookshelves. Instead of security guards watching every corner, a simple board near the entrance read, “Knowledge grows only when it is shared. Please return every book for the next reader.” Many visitors wondered how long such trust would last.
Years passed, and the library became the heart of the city. Children who once borrowed picture books returned as engineers, artists, doctors, and teachers. Some donated new books, while others volunteered to teach free classes on weekends. The building itself remained the same, but the lives it touched kept multiplying in ways no one could measure.
One day, a businessman who had lost most of his wealth during an economic crisis visited the library. Looking around, he smiled and said, “I lost my factories, my cars, and even my house. But the knowledge I gained over the years helped me begin again. Nobody could take that away from me.”
The librarian nodded and gently opened a copy of the Thirukkural. Pointing to one verse, she said, “Money may disappear. Fame may fade. Possessions may be lost. But education is the one treasure that stays with us through every season of life.”
She then recited:
கேடில் விழுச்செல்வம் கல்வி யொருவற்கு
மாடல்ல மற்றை யவை.
Kēḍil viḻuccelvam kalvi oruvarukku
māḍalla maṟṟai yavai.
Everyone standing there realised that the richest person is not the one who owns the most, but the one who carries knowledge that can never be stolen.

Education is the only wealth that never fades, can never be stolen, and continues to enrich its owner throughout life.

மைசூரில் புதிய பொதுநூலகம் ஒன்று திறக்கப்பட்டது. அந்த நூலகத்தில் அனைவரையும் ஆச்சரியப்படுத்திய ஒரு விஷயம் இருந்தது—புத்தக அலமாரிகளுக்கு பூட்டே இல்லை. நுழைவாயிலில் இருந்த சிறிய பலகையில், “அறிவு பகிர்ந்தால் மட்டுமே பெருகும். படித்த புத்தகத்தை அடுத்த வாசகருக்காக திருப்பிக் கொடுங்கள்,” என்று எழுதப்பட்டிருந்தது. “இப்படி இருந்தால் புத்தகங்கள் எத்தனை நாள் இருக்கும்?” என்று பலர் சந்தேகப்பட்டனர்.
ஆண்டுகள் கடந்து சென்றன. அந்த நூலகம் ஒரு கட்டிடம் மட்டுமல்ல; ஆயிரக்கணக்கான கனவுகளின் தொடக்கமாக மாறியது. அங்கு சிறுவர் புத்தகங்களைப் படித்த குழந்தைகள் பின்னர் மருத்துவர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள், விஞ்ஞானிகள், கலைஞர்கள் ஆகியோராய் வளர்ந்தனர். சிலர் புதிய புத்தகங்களை நன்கொடையாக வழங்கினர். சிலர் வார இறுதிகளில் இலவச வகுப்புகள் நடத்தினர். புத்தகங்கள் அறிவை மட்டும் அல்ல, மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கையையும் மாற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்தன.
ஒருநாள் தனது தொழிலில் பெரும் நஷ்டம் அடைந்த தொழிலதிபர் ஒருவர் நூலகத்திற்கு வந்தார். அமைதியாக புத்தகங்களைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த அவர், “என் பணம் போய்விட்டது. என் வீடும், வியாபாரமும் போய்விட்டது. ஆனால் நான் கற்ற அறிவு மட்டும் என்னைவிட்டு போகவில்லை. அதனால்தான் இன்று மீண்டும் வாழ்க்கையை ஆரம்பிக்க முடிந்தது,” என்றார்.
அதைக் கேட்ட நூலகர் சிரித்தபடி திருக்குறள் புத்தகத்தைத் திறந்து ஒரு குறளை வாசித்தார். “பொருள் இழக்கலாம். பதவி மாறலாம். புகழ் குறையலாம். ஆனால் கல்வி என்ற செல்வம் ஒருபோதும் அழிவதில்லை. அது நம்மோடு வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் பயணம் செய்யும்,” என்றார்.
பின்னர் அவர் இந்தக் குறளை வாசித்தார்:
கேடில் விழுச்செல்வம் கல்வி யொருவற்கு
மாடல்ல மற்றை யவை.
அன்று அங்கிருந்த அனைவரும் ஒரு உண்மையை உணர்ந்தனர். பணக்காரன் என்பவன் அதிகம் சம்பாதித்தவன் அல்ல; எத்தனை இழப்புகள் வந்தாலும் யாராலும் பறிக்க முடியாத கல்விச் செல்வத்தைப் பெற்றவன்தான் உண்மையான செல்வந்தன்.
