Everyone had secretly gathered in the community hall, hiding behind colourful decorations. Eleven-year-old Rahul stood near the entrance, waiting to switch on the lights when Aisha arrived.
As soon as the door opened, everyone shouted, “Surprise!” But instead of smiling, Aisha’s face suddenly looked worried. She quickly looked around the room and whispered, “Where’s my little brother?” The children immediately realised she had come searching for him before noticing the decorations. A few seconds later, her brother ran in from the playground, laughing and holding a birthday card he had made himself.
The moment Aisha saw him, the worry disappeared from her face. A bright smile spread across it before she even spoke a word. Rahul quietly noticed how everyone’s feelings had been revealed without anyone saying anything.
The teacher who was helping the children smiled and said, “This reminds me of a Thirukkural.” She recited:

Mugaththin mudhukkuṟaindhadhu uṇḍō uvappinum

தம்பியைப் பார்த்த உடனே ஆயிஷாவின் முகத்தில் இருந்த கவலை மறைந்து, அழகான புன்னகை மலர்ந்தது. அந்த மாற்றம் ஒரு வார்த்தை கூட பேசுவதற்கு முன்பே எல்லோருக்கும் புரிந்துவிட்டது. அதை கவனித்த ராகுல், மனித மனதில் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதை முகம் எவ்வளவு விரைவாக வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது என்பதை அந்த நாளில் உணர்ந்தான்.
அப்போது குழந்தைகளுக்கு உதவி செய்து கொண்டிருந்த ஆசிரியர் சிரித்தபடி, “இதற்கு ஒரு திருக்குறள் இருக்கிறது,” என்று கூறினார். பிறகு அவர் கூறினார்:
முகத்தின் முதுக்குறைந்தது உண்டோ உவப்பினும்
காயினும் தான்முந் துறும்.
“மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தாலும், கவலையாக இருந்தாலும், நாம் பேசுவதற்கு முன்பே நம் முகம் நம் உணர்வுகளை வெளிப்படுத்திவிடும் என்பதுதான் இதன் பொருள்,” என்று ஆசிரியர் விளக்கினார்.
