Every summer, the beach at Puri hosted a children’s sandcastle competition. The rules were simple—each child had to build their own castle using only sand, water, and seashells found nearby. Twelve-year-old Neel worked patiently on his castle while another boy secretly borrowed decorations from other children’s castles whenever they weren’t looking. His castle quickly became the most beautiful on the beach.
When the judges arrived, they asked every participant to explain how they had built their creations. As the children proudly shared their ideas, one little girl quietly said, “Those blue shells on his castle were on mine this morning.” Soon, several children recognised decorations that had disappeared from their own castles. The judges gently returned every shell to its rightful owner.
Without the borrowed decorations, the grand castle looked plain and unfinished. Neel didn’t win first prize that day, but he received a special certificate for building everything honestly with his own effort.
One of the judges looked at the children and said, “There is a Thirukkural that beautifully explains what happened today.” He recited:
சலத்தால் பொருள்செய்தே மார்த்தல் பசுமண்
கலத்துள்நீர் பெய்திரீஇ யற்று.
Salaththāl poruḷ seythē mārththal pasumaṇ
kalaththuḷnīr peydhirīi yaṟṟu.
He explained, “Trying to hold on to something gained through deceit is like pouring water into an unbaked clay pot. The water will not stay.” Neel looked at his simple castle and understood the lesson clearly.
Walking home, he realised that a prize earned unfairly never truly belongs to us. Just like writing on wet sand before the waves arrive, dishonest success disappears sooner or later.
Moral
Anything gained through dishonesty never lasts. Only honest effort creates success that stands the test of time.

நடுவர்கள் வந்தபோது, ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தையிடமும் அவர்கள் எப்படி தங்கள் கோட்டையை உருவாக்கினார்கள் என்று கேட்டார்கள். அப்போது ஒரு சிறுமி, “அந்த நீல நிற சிப்பிகள் காலையில் என் கோட்டையில் இருந்தவை,” என்று அமைதியாகச் சொன்னாள். உடனே இன்னும் சில குழந்தைகளும் தங்களுடைய சிப்பிகளை அடையாளம் கண்டனர். நடுவர்கள் அனைத்தையும் உரியவர்களிடம் திருப்பிக் கொடுத்தனர்.
அழகுக்காக எடுத்துச் சேர்த்த சிப்பிகள் இல்லாமல் அந்த பெரிய கோட்டை சாதாரணமாகத் தோன்றியது. நீலுக்கு முதல் பரிசு கிடைக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் தனது உழைப்பால் மட்டுமே கட்டிய கோட்டைக்காக நேர்மைப் பாராட்டு வழங்கப்பட்டது.
அப்போது நடுவர்களில் ஒருவர் குழந்தைகளைப் பார்த்து, “இன்று நடந்ததை அழகாக விளக்கும் ஒரு திருக்குறள் இருக்கிறது,” என்று கூறினார். பிறகு அவர் குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
சலத்தால் பொருள்செய்தே மார்த்தல் பசுமண்
கலத்துள்நீர் பெய்திரீஇ யற்று.
“ஏமாற்றத்தால் பெற்ற பொருளை பாதுகாக்க முயல்வது, சுடப்படாத மண் பானையில் தண்ணீர் ஊற்றுவது போன்றது. அந்தத் தண்ணீர் அதில் தங்காது,” என்று அவர் விளக்கினார். நீல் தனது எளிமையான மணல் கோட்டையைப் பார்த்தபடி அந்தக் குறளின் பொருளை நன்றாகப் புரிந்துகொண்டான்.
வீட்டிற்குத் திரும்பும்போது, பிறருடையதை எடுத்துச் சேர்த்த வெற்றி எப்போதும் நிலைக்காது என்பதை அவன் புரிந்துகொண்டான். நேர்மையால் கிடைக்கும் சிறிய வெற்றியே என்றும் மனதில் நிற்கும்.
