In Thanjavur stood a century-old public library that was loved by everyone in town. Fourteen-year-old Mithran spent most of his evenings there, reading adventure novels and helping visitors find books. The librarian often joked that Mithran knew the shelves better than the staff themselves.
One October evening, dark clouds rolled across the sky and heavy rain began falling without warning. Most visitors hurried home, but Mithran stayed back to finish the final chapter of a mystery novel. As the rain grew stronger, water started seeping through an old wooden window near the children’s section.
At first, nobody worried. But within minutes, the water spread across the floor and began moving toward the lower shelves filled with hundreds of books. The librarian and staff quickly gathered to discuss what should be done.
One person suggested moving only the rare books. Another wanted to wait for municipal workers. Someone else thought the rain might stop soon. Everyone agreed the books needed to be saved, yet nobody actually started moving them.
Mithran watched the water inch closer and closer. The problem was already clear. The solution was clear too. What was missing was action.
Without saying a word, he grabbed a trolley and began loading books from the bottom shelves. Seeing this, the librarian immediately sprang into action.
“Don’t wait! Start moving everything now!” she shouted.
Within seconds, students, staff, and nearby residents formed a human chain. Books passed from hand to hand. Children carried small stacks while adults lifted heavier boxes. For nearly an hour, everyone worked together as the rain continued pouring outside.
Soon, the entire section was flooded. Water covered the exact place where the books had been stored earlier. If they had waited even a little longer, hundreds of books would have been ruined forever.
The next morning, volunteers arrived to clean the library. Looking at the rescued shelves, the librarian smiled and recited:
சூழ்ச்சி முடிவு துணிவெய்தல் அத்துணிவு
தாழ்ச்சியுள் தங்குதல் தீது.
Sūzhchi muḍivu thuṇiveydhal aththuṇivu
thāzhchchiyuḷ thaṅgudhal thīdhu.
She explained, “We had already thought about the problem. We had already decided what to do. What saved these books was not more discussion—it was acting without delay.”
Mithran looked around the library with pride. That day, he learned that courage is not simply knowing the right thing. Courage is doing it before the opportunity slips away.

After careful planning and firm decision-making, delaying action is harmful. Success comes from acting at the right time.

தஞ்சாவூரில் இருந்த நூறு ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான பொது நூலகம் ஊர் மக்களுக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த இடமாக இருந்தது. பதினான்கு வயது மித்ரன் பள்ளி முடிந்ததும் அங்கே சென்று புத்தகங்கள் படிப்பான். நூலகர் கூட சில நேரங்களில், “இந்த நூலகத்துக்கு அடுத்த நூலகர் நீதான்!” என்று சிரித்தபடி சொல்வார்.
ஒரு அக்டோபர் மாலை திடீரென்று வானம் கருமையாக மாறியது. சிறிது நேரத்தில் கனமழை கொட்டித் தீர்த்தது. நூலகத்திற்கு வந்திருந்தவர்கள் அவசரமாக வீடு திரும்பினர். ஆனால் மித்ரன் மட்டும் படித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த கதையை முடித்துவிட்டு செல்ல நினைத்து அங்கேயே இருந்தான்.
அப்போது குழந்தைகள் பிரிவின் அருகிலிருந்த பழைய ஜன்னல் வழியாக மழைநீர் உள்ளே வரத் தொடங்கியது. ஆரம்பத்தில் அது பெரிய பிரச்சினையாக யாருக்கும் தெரியவில்லை. ஆனால் சில நிமிடங்களில் தண்ணீர் தரையில் பரவி கீழ் அடுக்குகளில் இருந்த நூற்றுக்கணக்கான புத்தகங்களை நோக்கி நகரத் தொடங்கியது.
நூலகரும் ஊழியர்களும் உடனே ஒன்றுகூடி என்ன செய்யலாம் என்று பேச ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். ஒருவர் அரிய புத்தகங்களை மட்டும் காப்பாற்றலாம் என்றார். இன்னொருவர் நகராட்சி ஊழியர்கள் வரட்டும் என்றார். மற்றொருவர் மழை குறையலாம் என்று நினைத்தார்.
எல்லோருக்கும் பிரச்சினை தெரிந்துவிட்டது. என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்பதும் தெரிந்துவிட்டது. ஆனால் யாரும் இன்னும் செயல்பட ஆரம்பிக்கவில்லை.
மித்ரன் தண்ணீர் மெதுவாக புத்தகங்களை நெருங்குவதை பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான். மேலும் காத்திருந்தால் பெரிய சேதம் ஏற்படும் என்று அவனுக்கு புரிந்தது. உடனே ஒரு தள்ளுவண்டியை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு கீழே இருந்த புத்தகங்களை அள்ளி மாற்ற ஆரம்பித்தான்.
அதைப் பார்த்த நூலகர் திடீரென்று எழுந்தார். “எல்லாரும் உடனே வேலை ஆரம்பிங்க! புத்தகங்களை மேலே மாற்றுங்க!” என்று சத்தமாகக் கூறினார்.
சில நொடிகளில் மனிதச் சங்கிலி உருவானது. குழந்தைகள் சிறிய புத்தகக் கட்டுகளை எடுத்துச் சென்றனர். பெரியவர்கள் கனமான பெட்டிகளை தூக்கிச் சென்றனர். வெளியே மழை கொட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தாலும் உள்ளே அனைவரும் ஒன்றாக உழைத்தார்கள்.
சிறிது நேரத்தில் அந்த பகுதி முழுவதும் தண்ணீரில் மூழ்கியது. ஆனால் அங்கே இருந்த அனைத்து புத்தகங்களும் ஏற்கனவே பாதுகாப்பான இடத்திற்கு மாற்றப்பட்டிருந்தன. இன்னும் சில நிமிடங்கள் தாமதித்திருந்தால் பல நூற்றுக்கணக்கான புத்தகங்கள் நிரந்தரமாக சேதமடைந்திருக்கும்.
மறுநாள் நூலகத்தை சுத்தம் செய்ய பலர் வந்தனர். புத்தகங்கள் பாதுகாப்பாக இருந்ததை பார்த்த நூலகர் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் மித்ரனை நோக்கி சிரித்தார்.
பிறகு அவர் மெதுவாக ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
சூழ்ச்சி முடிவு துணிவெய்தல் அத்துணிவு
தாழ்ச்சியுள் தங்குதல் தீது
பின்னர் அவர் விளக்கினார்:
“நேற்று எல்லோருக்கும் பிரச்சினை தெரிந்திருந்தது. தீர்வும் தெரிந்திருந்தது. ஆனால் புத்தகங்களை காப்பாற்றியது இன்னொரு ஆலோசனை இல்லை. சரியான நேரத்தில் எடுத்த செயல் தான்.”
மித்ரன் அமைதியாக அலமாரிகளை பார்த்தான். அந்த நாளில் அவன் ஒரு முக்கியமான உண்மையை புரிந்துகொண்டான்.
சரியான முடிவை எடுப்பது முக்கியம். ஆனால் அந்த முடிவை உடனே செயலாக்குவதுதான் உண்மையான துணிவு.
