In Coimbatore, 13-year-old Nilan was the most exciting boy in his apartment complex.
Every weekend, he came up with grand ideas.
“Let’s build a rooftop movie theatre!”
“Let’s create a secret club!”
“Let’s make a giant kite for Independence Day!”
At first, all the children loved him.
Nilan spoke with energy and confidence. He could convince anyone to join his plans.
But there was one problem.
He never stayed long enough to finish anything.
The rooftop theatre became a pile of cardboard boxes.
The secret club ended with half-painted walls.
The giant kite remained only as sticks and torn paper.
Still, every Monday, Nilan returned with another “amazing idea.”
One rainy evening, heavy winds hit the apartment area. Water began flooding the parking basement.
The electricity suddenly went off.
Parents rushed around with flashlights while younger children became frightened.
The apartment watchman shouted,
“We need sandbags near the gate quickly, or water will enter the generator room!”
Some older boys immediately began carrying bags.
Nilan also shouted,
“I’ll organize everything!”
But after lifting two bags, he disappeared upstairs to “find better tools.”
Minutes passed.
He never returned.
Meanwhile, the others continued working in the rain.
Among them was quiet 12-year-old Harish, whom nobody usually noticed.
Without making speeches, Harish calmly arranged the sandbags row by row. He directed smaller kids safely inside and kept working until the rain slowed.
By midnight, the flooding stopped.
The next morning, everyone in the apartment praised Harish.
Even the apartment association president thanked him personally.
Nilan stood silently nearby.
For the first time, he noticed something painful.
Nobody was asking for his help anymore.
That evening, his grandfather folded the newspaper and gently recited:

வேண்டாரை வேண்டாது உலகு.
Enaiththiṭpam eythiyak kaṇṇum vinaiththiṭpam

Then he explained:
“The world may admire talent, cleverness, or exciting ideas. But people trust only those who stand firm and complete what they begin.”
Nilan looked down quietly.
The words stayed in his mind for days.
A week later, he surprised everyone.
Without making big announcements, he repaired the unfinished rooftop theatre himself.
He cleaned the space, fixed old wires with an electrician uncle, arranged chairs, and completed everything patiently.
On Saturday night, children gathered happily under the stars to watch a movie together.
This time, nobody praised Nilan for his ideas.
They praised him because he stayed till the end.
And for the first time, that felt even better.

Even if a person has many abilities, the world will not value those who lack firmness in action.

“இந்த சுதந்திர தினத்துக்கு பெரிய பட்டம் விடலாமா?”
அவன் பேச ஆரம்பித்தாலே நண்பர்கள் எல்லாரும் உற்சாகமாகிவிடுவார்கள்.
ஆனால் ஒரு பிரச்சினை இருந்தது.
நிலன் எந்த வேலையையும் முழுமையாக முடிப்பதில்லை.
மாடி சினிமா திட்டம் பாதியில் நின்றது.
சீக்ரெட் கிளப் சுவரோவியமோடு முடிந்தது.
பெரிய பட்டம் குச்சிகளாகவே கிடந்தது.
ஆனாலும் ஒவ்வொரு வாரமும் அவன் புதிய திட்டத்தோடு வந்துவிடுவான்.
ஒரு மாலை பலமான மழை பெய்தது.
அபார்ட்மெண்ட் பார்க்கிங்கில் தண்ணீர் நிரம்ப ஆரம்பித்தது.
மின்சாரமும் போய்விட்டது.
சிறிய குழந்தைகள் பயந்து அழ ஆரம்பித்தார்கள்.
வாட்ச்மேன் அவசரமாகக் கத்தினார்:
“கேட் பக்கத்துல மணல் மூட்டைகள் அடுக்கணும்! இல்லனா ஜெனரேட்டருக்குள்ள தண்ணீர் போயிடும்!”
சில பெரிய பையன்கள் உடனே வேலைக்கு இறங்கினார்கள்.
நிலனும் சத்தமாக,
“நான் எல்லாத்தையும் ஒழுங்குபடுத்துறேன்!” என்றான்.
ஆனால் இரண்டு மூட்டைகள் தூக்கியதும்,
“நான் நல்ல டூல்ஸ் எடுத்து வரேன்!” என்று மேலே ஓடிவிட்டான்.
அதற்குப் பிறகு திரும்பவே வரவில்லை.
மழையில் மற்ற பிள்ளைகள் தொடர்ந்து வேலை செய்துகொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
அவர்களில் அமைதியாக இருந்த ஹரிஷ் என்ற பையன் மட்டும் எதுவும் பேசாமல் மணல் மூட்டைகளை சரியாக அடுக்கிக்கொண்டே இருந்தான்.
சிறிய குழந்தைகளை பாதுகாப்பாக உள்ளே அனுப்பினான்.
மழை குறையும் வரை நின்றதே இல்லை.
அடுத்த நாள் முழு அபார்ட்மெண்டும் ஹரிஷைப் பாராட்டியது.
அபார்ட்மெண்ட் சங்கத் தலைவர் கூட அவனை நேரில் பாராட்டினார்.
அருகில் நின்றிருந்த நிலன் அமைதியாக எல்லாவற்றையும் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.
அப்போது தான் அவனுக்கு ஒரு விஷயம் புரிந்தது.
யாரும் இனிமேல் அவனை நம்பி காத்திருக்கவில்லை.
அன்று மாலை அவன் தாத்தா மெதுவாக ஒரு திருக்குறளைச் சொன்னார்:
“எனைத்திட்பம் எய்தியக் கண்ணும் வினைத்திட்பம்
வேண்டாரை வேண்டாது உலகு.”

யாரிடமும் சொல்லாமல் பாதியில் நின்ற மாடி சினிமா திட்டத்தை மீண்டும் ஆரம்பித்தான்.
இடத்தை சுத்தம் செய்தான்.
எலெக்ட்ரீஷியன் மாமாவுடன் சேர்ந்து பழைய வயர்களை சரி செய்தான்.
நாற்காலிகளை அடுக்கினான்.
இந்த முறை அவன் பாதியில் விட்டு போகவில்லை.
சனிக்கிழமை இரவு மாடியில் எல்லா குழந்தைகளும் சேர்ந்து படம் பார்த்தார்கள்.
இந்த முறை யாரும் நிலனின் யோசனையை மட்டும் பாராட்டவில்லை.
அவன் கடைசிவரை நின்றதற்காக பாராட்டினார்கள்.
முதல் முறையாக — அது அவனுக்கு இன்னும் பெரிய மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தது.
