The Day the Lights Went Out

It was the final evening of the neighbourhood talent show, and eleven-year-old Anaya had been practising her shadow-puppet performance for weeks. She had prepared colourful paper characters, memorised the story, and even created her own background music.

Just as she stepped onto the stage, the lights suddenly went out.

The audience became silent. Someone whispered that the show would have to be cancelled. Anaya looked at her puppets and felt her confidence disappear. Then she noticed the emergency lights glowing faintly near the stage.

An idea came to her.

“Can we use our phone flashlights?” she asked.

The organisers agreed. A few volunteers stood around the stage, pointing their flashlights at the white screen. Anaya began her story again, using the moving lights to create shadows.

Something unexpected happened.

The shadows looked even more magical than they had under the stage lights. The audience began clapping along, and soon the entire hall was smiling.

After the performance, Anaya’s teacher asked, “Weren’t you frightened when everything went wrong?”

Anaya smiled. “I was. But the lights were gone, not the story.”

Her teacher nodded and reminded her of Thiruvalluvar’s words:

Idukkaṇ varuṅkāl naguga athanai
aduththūrva thahdoppathu il

When difficulties arrive, courage and a positive mind can help us overcome them. Anaya had discovered that the problem did not have to end her performance. It simply forced her to perform it differently.

Moral

A difficult situation does not always mean the end of the journey. Stay calm, think creatively, and face the problem with courage.

Idukkaṇ varuṅkāl naguga athanai
aduththūrva thahdoppathu il

Breaking it down

(Difficulty)
(When it comes)
(Smile / Face bravely)

(Overcoming it)
(Nothing is equal to it)

Trivia
