The Family Recipe Book

Every Sunday, twelve-year-old Vaidehi visited her grandmother’s house in Madurai. The entire family gathered in the kitchen to cook lunch together. Her grandfather chopped vegetables, her father kneaded dough, her mother prepared the curry, and the younger cousins folded banana leaves for everyone. It was noisy, joyful, and filled with laughter.

One weekend, Vaidehi asked, “Paati, why do we all do the work together? Wouldn’t it be easier if one person cooked everything?” Her grandmother smiled and took out an old handwritten recipe book. “These recipes aren’t special because of the ingredients,” she said. “They’re special because every page reminds us of someone who cooked with love.”

As they finished preparing the meal, the family sat down to eat together. The food tasted wonderful, but what stayed in Vaidehi’s heart was something even sweeter—the feeling of everyone caring for one another without expecting anything in return.

Her grandmother gently recited:

Aṟaththāṟṟin ilvāḻkkai āṟṟin puṟaththāṟṟil
pōōyp peṟuvathu evan

Thiruvalluvar teaches that a home built on love, responsibility, and virtue is the highest form of living. There is no greater reward to seek elsewhere than the goodness we create within our own family.

Moral

A happy home is built by sharing love, responsibility, and kindness. The greatest joy begins with living rightly together as a family.

Aṟaththāṟṟin ilvāḻkkai āṟṟin puṟaththāṟṟil
pōōyp peṟuvathu evan.

Breaking it down

(By the path of virtue)
(Family life)
(If lived rightly)
(In other paths)
(Seeking elsewhere)
(What greater benefit is there?)

Trivia
